It was almost always shit.
I tried to listen 2000's pop, and it's the same tasteless slop as today. I guess, back in the day there was more actually enjoyable tracks than today.
But overall, 70-95% of pop music it's shit quickly to be forgotten, regardless of an epoque/decade.

Mainstream music, especially the shit playing on the radio, on TV etc. is pure garbage.

Nowadays I prefer to listen to music without lyrics because humans just talk a lot of shit anyway whenever they open their mouths.

Most songs are either full of shit or very edgy and cringe.
