If you give me a box of objects, let's say spoons, and you tell me to count them and put the number down in a list, it will take me hours. The doctor even said at the end of the session that my normal verbal ability probably masks the stupidity, so people overestimate me and then get mad when I can't do shit.

Humans are, in general, very bad at estimating things like intelligence (especially their own), similar to how they bad they are at estimating distances or how many candies are in jars. We didn't evolve this way, because it doesn't serve much useful survival function. It's why we invented things like the standardized meter and IQ tests. The obsession a lot of people seem to have with this number is tied to how "human" they believe they are. If the biggest difference between humans and animals is intelligence, then intelligence is perceived as a kind of meter stick to how far away from an animal a person truly is.

The irony is that the test was initially invented as a tool to assess mental retardation, not how smart someone is. So in that respect, the test did the job it was designed for. Though, tbf, accurately measuring differences in cognitive horsepower is also something that the test incidentally does very well also.
