You'll hear a lot of gaming critics claim that the old Zelda formula was outdated, which is ironic considering the same critics praise Metroidvanias. If you didn't know, Metroidvanias are inspired by Zelda more than anything else.
Metroid was directly inspired by Zelda 1 and positioned as a combination of Zelda 1 with Super Mario Bros.
Symphony of the Night was inspired by Link to the Past.
These snobs are too small minded to grasp that metroidvanias are basically stretched out larger side scrolling Zelda dungeons. The gameplay loop is the same.
These gaming critics will also praise Dark Souls, while claiming older games are bad because they're trail and error.
I think what it really comes down to is presentation. New = good
Old = bad
A lot of these critics would have no issue if let's say, Zelda didn't change after Skyward Sword. They now pretend as if they've always had an issue with the classic formula, so they can prop up the new slop as a form of art.
