Francisco Franco’s dictatorship is divided into two stages: the first stage (1939–1959), based on the Italian and German models (price controls, autarky, bureaucracy, protectionism, state intervention in the economy); the result was a stagnant economy, food shortages, an inefficient industrial sector (due to protectionism), the destruction of the macroeconomic sector, and many other problems
Second stage 1959–1975:
In the second stage, Franco abandoned the fascist model, eliminated bureaucracy and price controls, opened up to free trade and abandoned autarky, reduced public spending, and reduced state intervention in the economy
essentially liberalizing the economy
Interestingly, during the second period, Spain experienced the highest economic growth in its history (the economic miracle)
