I agree. The appeal to nature argument is almost always stupid. Evolution doesn't "care" about rape and murder, it only "cares" about successfully passing on itself to the next generation with (hopefully) improvements.

However, this is an explanation for why humans find things beautiful. What it isn't is an argument for why anyone should ascribe any special, intrinsic value to beauty over other things, just by virtue of that property. Beauty serves functions. Unfortunately, people overwhelmingly overlook this and do all sorts of wild things, like interpreting the character and moral worth of a person or assigning social status based on beauty.

100% symmetrical faces are indeed uncanny, but I don't know if it's true that humans enjoy imperfection. Humans seek chaos and uncertainty as stimulation and relief of boredom (among other things), but I don't know if we could root this in a desire for imperfection.
