Let's say in a not-so-distant future, some super smart scientists invent a new, VR-like machine, that can make you endlessly happy without it getting boring ever. The happiness you experience while plugged in is endless & you can't experience pain, sadness or any other negative emotion ever. Here's the catch: once you plug in, you won't be able to turn the machine off aka you're stuck here forever. Would you tune into this machine?

this was a hypothetical experiment made by some known philosopher. the point is that u will be "happier" in the machine 100%. Just take OP's word for it happiness is a non-issue when plugging in. those who don't plug in probably have a strong desire for their life to be "real" since they actually care about helping others or some shit. it's an experiment meant to gauge how many of us are hedonists.

I would never plug myself into eternity, so "until I die" would be the better alternative.

I hate hypotheticals with a passion. Hyptotheticals are useless and nobody can accurately say what they'd do in a sitiuation they aren't actually faced with.
The "experiment" itself is whack, because the answer will be highly influenced by what kind of life somebody is living. Incels obviously will choose the machine 100% of the time because their life completely sucks while people who live a happy life won't.
