Post telco society is the major issue at play here. While it’s true that humans (like most other primates) follow the female choosing the mates rule, the access to wide variety of mates to choose from means that the previously viable biological algorithms are thrown amock - due to the much wider circle of available mates and the lack of consequences. This will only further enforce female hypergamy, we are in this state because there was a lot of evolutionary pressure for males but nearly none for females, they never had the necessity to evolve.
