More or less yes, but I'm pretty sure other EEs would contest it. For example, just having their own country for centuries instead of being serfs in one ruled by others is something a lot of ethnicities here could only dream about before modern times.

Didn't seem like such a good nation-state from what I read, very feudalistic even by the standards at the time.

It was very feudalistic, it was like in France before revolution, aristocracy and clerics vs town dwellers (mostly Jews) and peasants (more than 90% of society). And our partition by much smaller state like Prussia - they had a professional and regular army while we had some kind of conscription where land owners and magnates had to send some peasants with equipment. I could tell more about our parliament which was totally ineffective and 3rd May constitution which was an attempt of repairing of state but many magnates were bought by Russian aristocracy. Our country was literally outdated.

Yup. In general the evolution of serfdom in Europe is pretty interesting, at first it was predominant in the west during the High and Late Middle Ages, then it disappeared, and then it reappeared in the east, often just as strong as it was in the west centuries ago. Though, of course, slavery existed in both of them the entire time. But when serfdom was established in EE, while it was probably the worst in Russia where it was literal slavery with serfs sold at fairs or advertised in newspaper adverts and so on, in Poland it was definitely the second worst, with even contemporary commentators marvelling at how a homogenuous nation was capable of splitting itself in such a way and even people from other EE societes at the time, such as Hungary and other countries under the Austrian Crown, shocked by the social stratification and inequality there.
