To put it simple - about two or three teams from every continent who won their domestic leagues or came in second or third (perhaps they won a regional tournament) were invited to this spectacular. Barcelona didn’t qualify, because of a technicality.

It's getting increasingly better, yes.
 
Nobody cares about this kind of tournaments or matches in Europe because of the quality difference between teams. But in the other continents specially South America it's a huge deal.
