"The automatic registration of eligible U.S. men for the military draft is slated to begin in December.

The Selective Service System (SSS), a federal agency that has supported U.S. military readiness for more than a century, submitted the rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, where it is currently under review, according to federal records.

The SSS said the change is part of a broader effort to strengthen national defense by ensuring the country can quickly expand its armed forces if needed, providing support to the all-volunteer military force.

According to the agency, the shift to automatic registration was mandated under the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law on Dec. 18, 2025. The change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to the agency through integration with federal data sources, with implementation expected by December 2026.

Military service has been optional since 1973, and the last time the U.S. had a draft was the Vietnam War."

My view:

A large manpower isn't a good sign, because it indicates a war of which equipment will be mass produced.

The truth is, everyone talks about flashy jet battles, but for each F-35 jet you probably need 12 overworked Multi-Capable Airmen (MCA) or 25 people to maintain the planes, load ammo, repair damage, or even cooking food for the crews.

US navy has it at about 23 people to operate a F-18 fighter.

"A Navy F-18 squadron is 10-12 jets, 15-18 pilots ~5 or so ground officers (unless two seat then go figure you double the aircrew and nix some ground officers) and 200-250 maintainers. This obviously includes redundancy. "

Also, to occupy a town of 1000 people, you need about 20-25 soldiers; those soldiers will be helping the locals with infrastructure, intelligence, supplying, and a small amount of them will be actively engaged in combat (though there are no non-combat roles)

US Army's website is blocked in China, but here's what I can get from Gemini.

" U.S. Army Field Manual (FM) 3-24, Counterinsurgency, which establishes a recommended "troop density" of 20 to 25 counterinsurgents per 1,000 residents."

The tooth-to-tail (T3R) ratio is an amazing thing. It shows you how expensive war is manpower wise.

Also, you can use Google map to zoom into a city, and see how big it is, how many houses there are, and how long it takes to drive, and that is precisely why occupation takes so many men.
