An ugly guy being with a hot woman is a subject of conversation. It's memorable, it's funny for some, a source of amazement for others.

Comments like "what does she see in him" are frequent, as are "he must be rich".

It just proves that looks are so valuable that a person with good looks dating one that isn't is actually quite exceptional. And that the ugly person must be quite exceptional in other ways to compensate.
