Today, I saw a waist-high drain opening on the beach and decided to crawl through. Phone torch in one hand, crawling with the other. I wanted to see how far I could get.
It was pitch black after the first few minutes of tunnel and turns. My phone lost signal too. That's when I realised if my torch light died, it would be over. I thought about turning around since the tide kept coming in and filling up the tunnel, but I kept telling myself to not turn back.
I started to get semi-light headed about 2 thirds of the way through and forced myself to breathe deeply. In the video you will see the iron build-up in the water, which takes in oxygen from it's surroundings, hence the lack of oxygen in the tunnel. About halfway through there was a roaring sound of water, which spooked me, as if the drain filled up too far I will run out of breathing space.
I was starting to get quite nervous, but then I saw it. A faint light in the distance. Barely visible, reflecting off the concrete wall. It thankfully ended up being the outlet for the drain at the base of a mountain.
I was crawling for just under an hour, which took me through around 1-2 kilometers worth of pipe.
