When we were in college, perhaps they felt that they were being "edgy" by hanging around with somebody with issues, basically a variant of "slumming" when young adults are going through their edgelord phase. I was the archetype of being the "crazy but smart" guy to them as I was always helping them with their homework.
However, once they settle down and have popped out a kid or two like they have in their 30s and 40s, you start being seen as a "nutter" that they probably shouldn't have anything to do with anymore.
