Ever since COVID started years ago, I got used to wearing a face mask and over time it became something much deeper than protection from illness.
For me, it turned into a comfort thing. It became a way to feel safer in public and not be judged so harshly on my looks. After being treated badly for a long time, the mask honestly became my biggest escape and something that helps my anxiety a lot.
I’m not wearing it because of COVID anymore. I wear it because it makes me feel calmer and more confident when I’m outside. I used to wear the normal medical ones, but now I’ve switched to a black mask so I blend in more and don’t stand out as much.
Even so, I still feel awkward sometimes, like I’m the only one left doing it in 2026. In the past people would ask things like “why are you wearing that, COVID is over” or assume I was sick, so I’d just make excuses because I didn’t feel comfortable explaining the real reason.
The truth is, I feel much worse without it. Taking it off makes my anxiety shoot up and brings back a lot of bad feelings from how I’ve been treated before. The mask genuinely helps me feel okay enough to leave the house.
I wanted to ask honestly: does anyone else still wear a mask in 2026, not for COVID, but for comfort, anxiety, or personal reasons?
Sometimes when I see someone else wearing one I feel a huge sense of relief, like I’m not alone. Other times I worry that as more years go by I’ll look like the odd one out, even though for me it’s about mental comfort, not being stuck in the pandemic.
If anyone else relates or has gone through something similar, I’d really like to hear your experiences.
