I definitely have female friends, although I notice my female friendships typically gravitate to tomboys/more masculine adjusted females as I simply treat them like my male friends. Some of them have boyfriends, although I couldn’t really care less as I’m either acquainted with them too or they’re not mentioned much. I think it's possible if the female is motivated enough and wants to use the male for something, like to help her with stuff like academics, career advancement, handyman work, etc.. In that case she might be his true friend even if she has 0 sexual interest in him and never even holds hands with him. This is all assuming the guy isn't ugly...4 or 5 out of 10 or higher. She can and will drop him very quickly though as soon as she extracted what she wants from him.

I had a female friend in college and for a few years after and it was a genuine friendship. I think what helps to set things in a good direction at the start is either to have near zero attraction for her, and/or for her to already be in a relationship with a guy.
