Let's see how many of you can tell the reasoning behind this without looking it up. If you have your own creative schizo theory on how they found out an asteroid did it, then post it. Or any other theory of dino extinction for that matter.

Since no one gave the correct answer here is the explaination:
Iridium is an element that is not naturally found on earth. But it has been discovered on asteroids from outer space. They discovered a layer of iridium in the geological layers that mark the boundary between cretasceous and palogean period. This layer can be found in the same geological spot all over the planet. And the corresponding time period of the layer matches the time around which dinosaurs disappeared from the fossil record. Hence it's theorised than an asteroid took out dinosaurs
