I've grown up with a shit ton of pets. My family (extended as well) loves animals. Currently I have 2 dogs, 2 cats and 4 rats (1 mom and 3, 2 day old babies)

I've had both hamsters + rats and rats are x1000000000 better. Rats are more loving (hamsters couldn't give a shit about you) and they bite way less. Hamsters bite over a lot of dumb shit but rats rarely bite. I've never been bitten by a rat but I've been bit by hamsters a lot. Rats are so nice. I even could sleep with them in my bed and they don't run away while hamsters would just fuck off. Yes one of my parents lives in USA and has a German shepherd.
My “pets” consisted of a goldfish, hundreds of ants which I kept in testubes, a caterpillar, and a cricket. None of them lasted a day
