The Soviet Union began with Russia in the era of the horse and cart and left it in the atomic age. The Russian Empire in 1904 (before the February revolution) at its height was vast; really fucking big. However, it was technologically backwards and an economic colony of foreign investors. I once heard a history graduate describe Russian history from 1861-1917 as a perfect guide in how not to run a country.
