Okay, this isn't much of a thread, but as soon as I heard about this I was tickled.
In case you haven't heard, in Japan they celebrate Christmas by buying what is called a Christmas Cake. It is yummy, and everyone enjoys it. But, after Christmas ends on December 25th, the cake starts getting stale - and no one wants it anymore.
And so, unmarried women over the age of 25 (or 30) are sometimes referred to as Christmas Cake. Just like the leftover cake, no one wants them any longer.
Sadly, this expression is no longer common, as even in Japan women are marrying later and later. But to me, older unmarried women will always be Christmas Cake.
