It was until the rise of Michael Jordan, before the game was about coordinating offensive and defense through guards and big men. The greatest players of the 80s eras weren't just good they also had really good team mates. Like the Magic Lakers and Bird Celtics. But when Jordan came in on the mediocre bulls as athletic ball hog with an insane jump and became the NBA posterboy it popularized that style of play everywhere at all levels. The NBA changed the rules of course to weakening defense with things like the 3 second rule and officiating always favors guards.

Its funny because it completely destroyed the idea of positions in basketball, now every player has to be able to shoot memethrows to get 3. Now even the guards have to been taller than 6ft 4 to have any impact, now Point Forwards can be the main ball handlers and take on the role of Point Guards. At this point most NBA teams are just a star or two surrounded by maligned 'role' players who are just there to take the fall when the star doesn't perform or be ignored when they win.
