Dunno, I guess one was digging around inside and got stuck right under. I used to have a big trashbag full of trash inside and I would even occasionally see mice come out of the bag, I would hear it at night or even when it's quiet during the day occasionally. If my parents were dealing with something similar, then I could understand why, as cruel as it objectively is to lock up animals, they'd want a deterrent.
