When I write a song, I usually get a tune in my head, that's the vocal melody, Next you kinda make retarded gibberish to fill in the melody, then you grab whatever words are convenient, and if you're lucky, it sounds meaningful.
Most people who try to write songs go wrong by writing lyrics then shoe-horning them into a melody. It ends up sounding sing-songy and wrong. Melody first, words last.
