Brits agree short men have a problem and lots of women think there's a stigma
The YouGov study found that more than four in people agree there is a stigma about blokes being small, compared to a third who say there isn't
A majority of British adults believe there is a stigma in society about blokes being short. More than four in 10 (44%) agree that there is one, compared to just a third who insist there's no such thing.
Women are more likely to think there is a stigma around titchy fellas compared to men, with 46% of females thinking there is while 41% of lads do. People aged 25 to 49 are the most likely age group to believe there's a stigma. Nearly half of this age group think so, compared to just a third of the over-65s.
The survey found 47% of people aged 18 to 24 believe there is one, while 45% of those in the 50-64 bracket did as well. Londoners were the most likely to claim short men are stigmatised, with nearly half of the capital's residents agreeing. This compared to 45% of those in the rest of the South, 43% in the Midlands, 41% in both the North and Scotland, along with 43% of people in Wales.
The YouGov study comes after blokes admitted they fear the dating game is stacked against them after apps introduced new height filters. Tinder has a paid-for height filter, along with Bumble and Hinge. One man said a potential partner even cried when he told her he was only 5ft2ins before they met up.
Stuart, who is 5ft 7ins, from the Midlands and in his 50s, said: “I’ve experimented with not putting my height on my dating profile, or lying about it just to see, and the number of likes I get shoots up massively. I know I get screened out by the majority of women from the off.”
Another fella, Michael, 31, who is 5ft 2ins, said he opposes height filters as he fears most women would exclude anyone at either the tall or short end of the scale. He said: “Half ghosted me as soon as they learned about it. “One woman, whom I’d gotten to know quite well, said my height was shocking when I told her on a phone call, then cried for half an hour. She turned out to be 5ft 8in.”
