Because it's an important milestone in a person's psychological and social development. Throughout human history, virtually all cultures and societies agreed that sexual maturity marks the beginning of adulthood. It's the time when girls become women, and boys become men. Pretty much all of us here are still sexually stuck in a childhood mode.

The fact that teen love doesn't last is actually irrelevant. It's the experience that counts. Imagine a 30+ year old trying to read for the first time or play sports. I don't think that teen romance is nearly as important as people think. It may have been before the early 2000's, but was a lot less common by the late 2010's. Now it has become something of a rarity.

I'm not really hung-up about it, I'm more hung-up about the fact I was cast out and sent to pasture before I had even reached 25 by a collation of events I both do and don't control.

This is an undeniable fact. We need experiences to fully develop and grow as human beings. When other people surpass us with this experience, they become harder to relate to and that's why we find ourselves isolated. This is the main reason it's a problem; to find someone older who would accept someone inexperienced for all their flaws is extremely rare and unlikely. They would have to be completely accepting and selfless, and that goes against basic human nature.
