Japan has the highest share of childless 50-year-old women among developed countries, the most recent data shows, underscoring the challenges the nation faces in averting its looming population crisis.

In Japan, 27% of women born in 1970 have not experienced any live births by the time they were 50 years of age, according to statistics from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This is by far the biggest share among 17 countries with comparable data, the closest being Finland at 20.7%.

It becomes clear what causes hypergamy when we look at Japan. Since WW2 until the asset bubble collapsed in 91, Japan led the world in urbanization, economic growth, and women entering the workforce. Japan went from a feudal agrarian society to an industrialized one in just a single generation, and then from a basic industrial economy to a highly advanced post-industrial one within the next generation. Once women become too well-off and no longer directly rely on men, they have ever higher standards for men.

And the more rapid the economic changes come, the more rapid the increase in hypergamy and other social changes. This is why countries that have developed later yet even more rapidly than Japan, like China and South Korea, have seen their birth rates plunge even faster. It will be a bit longer before their population starts to decline, but when it does it will be much more rapid. Although China is already declining due to the One Child Policy (thank God for that, the less chinks the better).

The advent of the internet and smartphones was just another technological leap that accelerated the increase in hypergamy and various other kinds of social dysfunction.
