Newzealand is politically and militarily aligned with Australia and Australia has recently announced to procurre nuclear subs so that makes Australia a legitimate nuke target and the chineese wont spare NZ too for the above reason.
Limited amount of nuclear strikes won't destroy even New Zealand, they will target military bases mostly. And modern nuclear warheads are not like 50 megaton tsar bomb, it's much less powerful, most warheads are below 1 megaton, priority in favor of accuracy. Even if you live somewhere in U.S or russia, and you don't have any military bases, ICBM silos, military industry and other important places which may be a target, your major problem at first would be radiation (although it's nothing like Chernobyl because warheads have less plutonium and other radioactive elements) and then lack of food, clean water, anarchy, marauders.
