I believe being a shop owner has to be one of worst jobs out there. The rent, the bargaining, the hard work etc.
My father's line were merchants (I use this term as in people who offer goods to others).

It's not a comfortable life. You are constantly working with people hell bent on bargaining for a cheaper deals. And many people are straight up rude. Then you have to be very tough to deal with rivals without being undercut/bullied.
It is also all about being charismatic and bargaining too, you must know your customers and talk sweet to them, so you will get people who are loyal and connections for better deals.
Then you have to deal with the logistics of stocking what's popular. It can be hard to compete with more established stores if you can't get a programmer to make an algorithm that keeps track of data.
Finally, unless you can offer something that can't be done with online services like temu or Amazon (or at least inconvenience), like phone repair, good luck.
And you sure as hell aren't competing with chain stores rushing in; the only way to do so is to sell cheaper, which leaves to a economic death spatial for your store.
