They twist it to say that they were "killed for being women" because if they were men, they wouldn't have been in relationships with those guys in the first place, but never apply the same logic to guys who were killed on the street because of mistaken identity or being caught in the crossfire in a situation where being seen as a potential threat was deadly (in every street fight I've ever seen the guys made it clear that they didn't consider any of the women there to be a part of it but did all the guys there, regardless of what they were doing as individuals).
People got too used to it being the leftwingers who constantly screech about evil males, while conservatives always talking about "protecting women" has felt for a long time like just an anti-immigrant dog whistle rather than a genuine desire by itself.
