A Hungarian man who spent more than 50 years languishing in a Russian psychiatric hospital went home to his family on Wednesday.
Andras Toma, 74, was captured as a prisoner of war in 1944, and was forgotten after he became ill and went to a Soviet psychiatric hospital in 1947.
His mental problems cleared up in 1953, but the staff at the hospital in Kotelnich, east of Moscow, thought he was still unbalanced because they didn't understand his speech. They thought he was talking gibberish.
Toma was returned to Hungary in August after a chance encounter last year with a Slovak doctor who spoke Hungarian. Toma rarely spoke until the doctor thought he recognized the language.
In December, the Hungarian embassy in Moscow was contacted and Toma was sent to a hospital in Budapest this summer.
He was released on Wednesday, and is now staying with his sister while a house is built for him next to his brother's home.
The worst of all he passed away without any legacy or loving wife mourning him.
