So I'm in a not-so-common situation in that I'm an average 5'9 white guy in an Asian country where the local average is like 5'6. My (local) girl is 5'6 among an average of like 5'2. Given this context, her dissatisfaction with my height surprised me. We're actually just a whirlwind romance before she moves away in a couple months so it's not long-term but I want to talk about us anyways.
The girl I've been seeing lately is extremely height-conscious. It's her first or only way to describe people, talking about a guy she rejected like "but he was cute though, 6'2" or tell me about her sister's boyfriend on the other side of the world "he's a nice basketball player, 6'3".
This girl has also straight-up said to me "you're the only guy I've ever been with who's not 6 feet" and worse, "I'm really picky about the guys I hook up with but if I'm going for a relationship-y thing it's different". "My type is usually 6ft and buff" (I'm skinny) and "yeah no you're not conventionally attractive but you're cute".
In my instance it's fine. The things she's said contradict the fact that she did immediately hook up with me. It's a pretty low-commitment short-term thing, like FWB but a little more cutesy; 90% of our meetings are just sex She pays for most dates, she posts photos of me to show her friends, and introduced me to some family so I've got no cause for insecurity. Still, this is the first time I've had someone flat-out tell me that they're not fully physically attracted to me so it's got me thinking.
Obviously if you react and the appearance of "short man syndrome" comes out it's game over. I presume my "idgaf" reaction is probably the best one, but I'd be interesting to hear stories of how you've responded.
Have you had many cases where this kind of thing has blown over? Once it comes out that she's not satisfied with your height, has that spelled the beginning of the end of the relationship?
There's lots on this sub about confronting height on dating apps or first dates, but please tell me your stories about times this has come up with a person you've already got some feelings for.
