With the same tone and all of that.

Despite my name, I just got back into anime after not watching it since 2017. First anime I finished besides all the DBZ movies was Monster and I really liked it. Currently I'm watching Steins;Gate.

I have seen Death Note which is by the same guy but might rewatch it. And I watched Lain like 12 years ago which has a similar serious tone with lots of mindfucking but of course different plot.

I'll mention some of my favorites and well regarded ones, which may be in some ways similar to monster. There's nothing quite like it, but there are shows that share some similarities.

Kaiji the ultimate survivor: This is hands down one of the best psychological and gambling shows of all time, the stakes here are real and the MC doesn't feel like a lucky protagonist.

Code Geass: Very much similar to Death Note, if you liked it you probably will enjoy this one as well. There are mechas so that may be a turn off for some, but they're not super relevant to the plot other than some gimmicks here and there.

Higurashi no naku koro ni: An incredible horror anime, it's uncomfortable, ugly and there are incredible twists.

Based, thank you.

I finished Higurashi years ago and loved every bit of it. Definitely one of my top 5 anime of all time.

master keaton, it's by the same guy

If you read manga,I advice 20 century's boys by same author

Kaiji is best recommendation, great show and manga

Code Geass is cringe

Higurashi is loli torture porn, would go with vns if that's your thing, Studio Deen did the main arcs and they are not fantastic

Golden Kamuy maybe? It has a less serious tone, but it's not comedy (most of the time). There is a bit of mind games, but mostly has a similar pacing. Side events happening simultaneously in different places, having an effect on the main plot. There is a little bit of mystery and discovering characters' backstories. The manga is better than the anime imo

also must mention, Texhnolyze. And if you like the more conversational and main dynamic kinda battle clash like protag vs antagonist like Johan vs Tenma, then Psycho Pass

Code Geass is cringe
I get why you might think that, still it's one of the best regarded animes of all time, with one of the most iconic and greatest endings too.

It's always best to go with the source material first, if you like reading the VN is better overall than the anime, but the anime it's a good introduction to it.

I mean, Attack On Titan, agree with Code Geass, Moriarty the Patriot, S1 of Psycho-Pas (definitely)
