Angel's Egg is underrated. Found it with subs about 5 or 6 years ago.

Watched the first and second movie but I never understood it. Just like Akira.

The first film has amazing animation, but the plot itself is all over the place and pretty shallow.

The second film is a pretty enjoyable philosophical wank.

Standalone complex series is a great anime with many self contained stories in it's episodes.
