pretty much, they generally make disempowered everyman characters so readers find them relatable + get invested in a power fantasy plotline

also used to be common in western entertainment, where eg. hs films often had shy nerdy underdog protags for the same reason, as well as populist shit like bay's transformers or foid romance protags like bella swann

by now it's also spread to webnovels, which do it in a dumb by-the-numbers way based on isekai

tbh it's all quite ridiculous
