The last time I came dangerously close to carrying it out and the fear of death caused me to go crazy. I had to be hospitalized for half a year. I don't want to go through that again so I can only live.

The survival instinct. A b*#ch to overcome. And that, I think, is why so many people living in ghastly conditions (chronic poverty, chronic unemployment, homelessness, soul-crushing loneliness, black emotional pain...) tragically live on until something kills them--like disease, destitution, human predation... It's almost mind-boggling to realize that it's 2020 but our world cultures STILL haven't figured out a reliable way out of these hells.

I read that study (the Dartmouth Blanchflower study). I don't put much credit in this as objective truth. Given how underrepresented the elderly are in most aspects of social life, their opinions, if it's even possible to get an accurate impression despite cultural biases..., might be heavily inaccurately- or underrepresented. I've worked in nursing homes. There's no way I'll believe 47 yo's either perceive themselves to be or are statistically more miserable. But I do hope things go upstream for you from here on out, man.
