Was talking to my grandma and cousin and grandma brought up AI and how her TV told her it could take our jobs in the future. Cousin is looking to get hired at a factory so I say "yeah mindless jobs like that could easily be replaced." As a response to that statement he said "AI can't replace humans"

That pissed me off. What an insult to humanity. It's as if he said working in a factory was a part of human nature. Yes, the AI will never think, it will never love, it will never hate, it will never fear. It's not replacing shit. Factory working isn't an attribute of human beings. Factory working has nothing to do with humanity. Professions are social constructs. Nobody was born a factory worker, they were born human, naked and untamed.

AI won't replace humans, it will replace false identity. Employment is simply roleplay. If you identity as a lawyer, a doctor, any profession, you are an actor in a theater. When you die your gravestone won't say "Here lies a hairdresser", it will say "Here lies a son, a brother, an uncle."

Those knacks were meant to be used for essential human activities. The caregivers should've been fathers and mothers, the athletes should've been hunters and warriors, the construction workers should've been shelter builders. Instead they get mechanized and made to perform said tasks in a repetitive, mind-numbing manner for strangers. Instead of periodically performing them only when necessary, for the sake of their own families.

Not really though, my statement was mostly that Human =/= Job. The AI still can't think for itself, it can arrange words but doesn't understand the meaning behind those words. It has syntax but not the semantics.

Yeah my point was basically- cars replaced horses in the function of transport, but horses aren't just transport personified. Horses have existed for a long time before they were tamed and used for transport. A horses purpose isn't to be ridden.

I so fucking agree. What humans do has changed from century to century, and this is no different. Just like how we freed ourselves from an agriculture based society by overproducing food until people no longer had to work for their own, thus letting them specialize and build the modern world. We are just going to keep specializing even more with the advent of A.I; it might even transform society into something completely different, maybe a scholary based one, where research, exploration, and self-fulfillment are the only things we really need anymore.

Our jobs aren’t who we are, they’re just the gears we use to access life in this era.
