After a nuclear war the nuclear winter will last probably around 7-10 years. Extreme cold and reduced light levels will reduce plant activity. It will be survival of the fittest. There will be extreme famines. The cold and starvation will kill more than the war and the effects of radiation and wounds. Even after the nuclear winter ends the entire infrastructure of the global economy will have been destroyed. Including the basis of modern agriculture which is oil. There will be no diesel to power any of the farm machinery necessary. No pesticides. No agrichemicals. No fertilizers. Crop yields will be tiny. UV levels will be extremley high due to the damage all the dust has done to the ozone layer. Causing high levels of skin cancers and cataracts.

The other factor will be lack of medical care where 1 in 3 women used to die in childbirth. Infectious disease would kill many, no vaccinations or medicine. Especially when people are poorly nourished. Not to mention the effects of radiation causing mutations in the population. There would likely be Cholera and Typhoid outbreaks.

There will be no baby boom after the war. At least not in North America, Europe or the Eurasian land mass. Given the untold millions in other parts of the world who are dependent on western grain imports, foreign aid and technical expertise there will potentially be even larger die offs in Africa and certain Latin American and South Asian countries. Even countries like Australia and New Zealand will have it hard as they will have little to no access to imports. New Zealand for example only produces a tiny amount of oil domestically. I'm unsure about Australia. I know they have coal mining and certain gas reserves. Now a clever bunch like the Aussies will be able to manage. You can manufacture synthetic oil if you have hydrocarbons but it will be a large and expensive endeavor. Indonesia to their north also has oil production. Although in this situation the Aussies may have to contend with a possible invasion by Indonesia.

There will also be no food imports and they will have to set up a total domestic supply chain for fertilizers and agrichemicals. Not to mention manufacturing a supplying spare parts for farm machinery which is current imported.
