Besides being ineffective as a way to raise social status (social displays of intelligence or knowledge are mostly seen as arrogance, unless their contextual relevance in conversation is >95% or they are directly linked to your line of work), it encourages intellectual narcissism, which itself is a source of intellectual stagnation. When you are more concerned about appearing smart than about challenging yourself constantly, you're going to quickly devolve into a dumb neckbeard.

Besides, as @Red Shambhala wrote, the power of rhetoric is vastly exaggerated. Rhetoric is not completely useless (the impact of religion and theology on history is immense), but overall, it's just less important than other attributes.
