As collective awareness expands, it seeks deeper answers, and the perceived universe expands to accommodate this. This manifestation must stay steps ahead of the collective consciousness seeking to peek behind the curtain of so-called reality. My two cents. That also explains why the Universe is expanding at a faster rate, and not slowing down as cosmologists previously claimed.

The universe expansion may not be accelerating at all.
Recent research suggests that matter and thus gravity is not spread evenly throughout the universe as is currently believed.
Thus there are large voids in the universe with little matter or gravity.
Time thus goes quicker in these parts.
The light from distant objects in the universe is thus red shifted as it travels through these different areas, the red shift being caused by time dilation rather than the current theory of distant light sources moving away at an accelerating velocity.
The theory is called timescape or something like.
Don't know if that is interesting to you but it just came to mind reading this.
