In polygamous societies, which there have been a lot of in the past, you would have a notable population of incels by design, and even in monogamous societies the men at the top would routinely have sexual relationships with multiple women instead of only sticking to their wives. AFAIK, even the oldest sources we can analyze give us lifelong singledom rate in the 10-15% range at least for Medieval European population, and that's just marriages, not reproduction. Add in that, and I can imagine something like 20% of men not reproducing for most of history even in societies with "enforced monogamy" as Jordan Peterson called it (pissing off a bunch of soys and feminists in the process). Not as wild as 60%, but still enough for inceldom to be widespread.

While it is true that humanity has had more mothers than fathers, that figure is wildly inflated and it doesn't really tell the whole story. It probably hasn't ever been that high outside of extreme events like the Neolithic agricultural bottleneck. And even then, this skew can partly be attributed to men living more violent and chaotic lives than women. Throughout human history, it was more common for men to engage in hunting and warfare. Women typically lived safer lives. This has obviously resulted in more men dying prematurely.

Moreover, it is important to highlight that throughout many human conflicts, it has been common for powerful tribes to kill the male members of subjugated tribes and take their women. These victors of war accrued harems while erasing entire male lineages. There are many recent examples of this ranging from the Rape of Nanking, the Bosnian genocide and the Yazidi genocide. You still see groups like Boku Haram and ISIS doing this today. To this very day, men are still more likely be mistreated and killed.

It is reductive and simplistic to reduce historical polygyny down to evo-psyche nonsense. Sexual selection is only part of the story. These men who died without reproducing weren't just icky incels; many of them were likely killed or murdered.

Just because something happened in the past doesn't mean it's justified nowadays.
