I lie awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. The glowing digital clock reads 2:37am. I think back on my day, trying to exhaust my mind enough to sleep. But the thoughts just keep spiraling.
I flip over onto my side and hug my pillow, squeezing my eyes shut. I picture sleeping sheep jumping over fences, counting backwards from 100. Nothing works. My brain is racing a mile a minute.
Frustrated, I throw back the covers and sit up. The room is dark except for the soft blue light of my phone charging on the nightstand. I grab it and start mindlessly scrolling through social media, desperate for any distraction.
As the hours drag on, my exhaustion grows but sleep remains elusive. I start to lose grip on reality, nodding off for just moments before jolting awake again. Am I dreaming while conscious? Have I lost my mind to the sandman who refuses to visit?
Weak morning light peeks through the blinds. I check the clock - 5:03am. I laugh manically to myself in disbelief. Another night wasted, tossed aside like yesterday's news. How many more will be sacrificed to the insomnia gods before they show mercy?
As a new day begins, all I feel is the growing weight of sleep deprivation bearing down on my mind, body and soul. The city is waking but I remain lost in the delirious wasteland of no sleep until dawn. The joke is on me once again.
