I was never able to understand this hire. Moot was hired by Google to work on google maps in Japan. But why would they need to hire an American (who might not even speak Japanese fluently, and is almost certainly not fully literate in the written language) to work in Japan when Japan has no shortage of talented programmers? Not to mention you have to deal with work visas when hiring a foreigner. It's not even like moot was a particularly talented or accomplished programmer. 4chan was just a clone of futaba channel.

I've read the theory that Moot was given the job as a reward from the feds, and while I'm not keen on conspiracy theories, I can't think of another theory that makes any sense, other than him possibly just being a trophy hire (like when they hired Ray Kurzweil). But even the trophy hire theory doesn't make a whole lot of sense since they're usually done for publicity, and 4chan (which is all moot is known for) has an extremely negative reputation.
