The ancient Roman dam diverted excess rain water away from a town as it was designed to do without any damage or loss of life. Newer dams failed and caused extensive damage and sadly loss of life in other areas of Spain.

Notice the tremendous forces the Roman dam deals with successfully. Perhaps the Roman dam had been well maintained over the years by the Spanish authorities or maybe not. Regardless this is still astonishing that it still works and works so well.



 
Its because concrete made in the olden days had typically optimal grain size. And it had volcanic ash. Considering that coloseum still stands to this day (and is becoming even harder and harder as time passes) is a testament to this
