Wikipedia has many good articles on the history of the Catholic Church, if you want to get started somewhere.

You could also read the Vatican Catechism to get a good overview of the religion. It says that suicide is a lack of charity towards oneself, but that there is some unknown level of forgiveness if it is due to clinical depression or great fear of hardship. Christianity is not pointing fingers at suicidees and maniacally laughing at their torment in the afterlife. It sees suicide as something terribly sad, and insists that only God knows what truly happens to suicidees.

Dante depicted their torment as relatively minor compared to the rest of sinners, but still eternal. Keep in mind that Dante is not canon, he's just a writer who emitted an hypothesis.
