Ah, and that is entirely consonant with my experience as well. But I also believe that intelligence exists along several axes, which are not negated by the falsehood of "general intelligence". The overwhelming majority of the academically successful I encounter lack incision, discernment, and most of all originality, while some of the most penetrating wits I've know have trouble bagging groceries or even finding a job at all. I'd also support your noting that a lot of people of humble station are self-sufficient and practically nimble. At the most basic level, I'd make a distinction between genius (the capacity for universal, systemic insight) and talent (which breaks down further). When I talk about intelligence, I mostly refer to the variety of talent that you see in the technical and academic arenas.
