After spending an hour or more reading this post (and who tf is that ‘Chadlite’ user JFL), it made me rethink the whole TP vs WW debate. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/266202-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom/80842394?page=1
Yes, WWHD did outsell TPHD, but I think it’s the same reason why SSHD had millions of sales (which is 3.91M). WWHD was released on a console two generations later, compared to TPHD being 1 generation later (the older the release, the more ‘blue ocean’ players you can capture with a remake). The Wii U was also backwards compatible, so if your older brother had a Wii, and you were given a Wii U all for yourself, then he would’ve lent you his TP disc and had 4 fucking years to do so if he couldn’t be bothered to find it in the attic for a couple months or something. 2012-2016. 2012 was when the Wii U came. 2016, TPHD.
Also, TPHD sold more than WWHD on first week (according to ChatGPT). Yes, it was promoted more, and was later into the Wii U’s lifespan when more people could buy it, but I literally never heard of a wolf link amiiboo until like December lmao. And I was caught up with a ton of the (smash bros) amiiboo hype in 2014-2017ish. Even had one myself. To be very honest, maybe I do remember it deep within the recesses of my brain, but it still wasn’t memorable. Maybe I came across the marketing, but didn’t care. Idk
Another thing people talk about is how WW sold high in proportionate to how many GameCubes existed. 1.) There will always be a core Nintendo audience that buys the system no matter what 2.) Moms (especially the closer we move to the helicopter/devouring archetype) buy these cartoonish games for their children. That’s why:
I believe if you had sales graphs overtime in front of you of WW vs TP, you’d see all of WW’s being more steady and linear. TP is more logarithmic (aka an upside-down L shaped curve). People were hype for TP, which is why I heard it sold 1.2M first week (compare that to BOTW 900k… wow), however I never heard NORMIES talk about TP growing up. It was wind waker I heard them talk about and praise for its story. And it makes sense that you’d be more likely to hear about WW (at least if you were like me and were growing up up during the Wii U era). Ganondorf only
. I could 1000% see casuals who were initially hyped for TP drop it mid-game. There was a guy on this site who said he dropped TP during the
. I bet if there was a way to see retention rates, WW will be higher.
Also, if my mom theory is what truthfully holds up wind waker, then that would mean that WW by default has more emotional connection to people because they were very young when exposed to it (bumping up that nostalgia factor).
This is why the real question behind the WW vs TP likeability debate (amongst casual fans who don’t even know debates like these exist) is, which game is more liked by the specific age demographics when both games are 50/50 likeable in theory (which is like around like mid to late middle school imo). And then you’d also have to ask them after they played the game to rate it.
The 50/50 comes from my theory that you’d feel more attracted to wind waker as a child compared to as a later developed teen.
Please note that likeability is different from success: you don’t need likeability to be successful.
Also, I’m planning on completing TOTK before thursday, so spoil the game in the replies to motivate me to finish it.

appeared towards the end of TP, but was all throughout WW
temple of time dungeon. That’s right before the ganon reveal.
