As populations interbreed within them, they lose their genetic differences they attained inside of their population and become more homogenized. you are right about speciation, but speciation occurs in 3 states, allopatric speciation (physically barriers/mountains), Sympatric speciation(within same area), Parapatric sepciation in which neighboring populations diverge while still remaining contact. All of these takes 10,000 -> 1 million years, and they take an insane amount of time for species to diverge if any reproductive contact is maintained. If populations don't intermix freely, then geneflow is not homogenized within the entire species, causing divergence to some what occur
