Other people already mentioned a lot of things, but I would add that it's kind of like Twitch and how people in chat on Twitch send money ("bits", subscriptions, etc.) to the streamer so they can "be friends" with the streamer, earn their favor, and have a parasocial relationship with them. Sure when you pay for a subscription to a streamer you get "muh custom emotes and chat badges!!" but it's really just about buying the favor and fake "friendship" of the streamer.
