They didn't want to convert to Christianity or Islam in order to not align with their christian and muslim neighbours (and thus alienate the others). Ironic also as it's pretty obvious that poland is the israel of europe. They sit on foreign land and cultivate a victim complex, claim to be some chosen people (jfl chosen for toilet cleaning maybe).
