I'm a vet and I've had to euthenize animals, its not fun and its not easy. I hate it and its by far the worst part of my job. Maybe second from all the animal abuse victims that come into my care.
If the puppy/kitten was going to die, or was in a situation beyond help, then sure. Otherwise? Hell no.

I lot of people seem to think cats don't appreciate their owners. Cats simply express themselves differently. Dogs are very overt in their reactions and tend to be much more needy. Cats however are just independent and don't need overt affection. A cat will show its love by just hanging out around you. A cat that decides to share space with you, and trusts you enough to sleep nearby or on you, is a cat that loves you.
