I think biggest problems "nerds" face is not simply that women reject nerds, but that women evade nerds before a rejection would even be possible. Young women gravitate away from men they perceive as being "nerds". If a nerdy looking male is waiting for his food at McDonalds, a young woman will be sure to stand in the opposite side of the room when she waits for her food. If a young woman is working on a project at work with a nerd, she will find a (seemingly legitimate) excuse to change projects. The nerd will think "where are all the women?", and blame it on himself that he is not doing enough to actively meet women.

Meanwhile, the thug does not need to "actively try to meet women" at all. Women just gravitate towards him, so he has opportunities to meet women in his everyday life. He will order something at McDonalds, and it will be an ordinary occurrence for a young woman to stand nearby, playing with her hair, looking approachable.
